"Since both my parents were blind, I frequently visited the Service Club as a child. It holds many good memories for my sisters and brother and me – we were given new school clothes and shoes here - in fact it was the one place where we could visit Santa. The entire family benefited from the opportunities available at the Service Club it brought my parents together with other blind persons who shared similar challenges while we made friends with other children who had blind parents." - T.H. "The services and activities provided by the "^ Service Club for the Blind have opened new worlds and new doors for me and others with visual impairments."-R.H. Adeline Ruenzi Founder of Service Club for the Blind, Inc Adeline Ruenzi became blind at the turn of the 20th century while still in her 20s, introducing her, first hand, to the challenges of being sightless in a sighted society. She quickly set about learning Braille and then teaching it to the blind and visually impaired. In 1934, after witnessing the needs of clothing, educational, professional and recreational opportunities for the blind, she established the Service Club. Her determination, intelligence and indomitable spirit was recognized in 1947 when she was honored as the Woman of Achievement. She died in 1971 at the age of 95. Her legacy is the Service Club, as it continues to serve the blind and visually impaired into the 21st century.
