Subject: [Modisabilaw] Home Access Tax Credit
Did you know...
If you had expenses for access modifications to your home for someone with a disability during 2009, you may be eligible to receive a state income tax credit up to $2,500. The credit is called the Residential Dwelling Accessibility Tax Credit. Regardless of the amount of state income tax owed, you may be eligible to receive the full credit amount.
The credit is issued on a first come first serve basis. Funds are limited to $100,000 for all of Missouri each year.
Who can receive the credit?
If you are an individual or married couple filing a joint state return and have an adjusted gross income of between $30,000 to $60,000, you can receive a tax credit equal to 50% of the amount you spent on home modifications up to $2,500.
If you are an individual or married couple filing a joint state return and have an adjusted gross income of $30,000 or less, you may receive a tax credit equal to 100% of the amount spent on your home modifications up to $2,500.
If your adjusted gross income is over $60,000, you do not qualify for the credit.
Eligible costs include: constructing entrance or exit ramps, widening exterior or interior doorways, widening hallways, installing handrails or grab bars, moving electrical outlets and switches, installing stairway lifts, installing or modifying fire alarms, smoke detectors, and other alerting systems, modifying hardware of doors and modifying bathrooms.
The person with a disability must be a resident of the home and be unable to be employed in substantial gainful activity because of their disability.
To claim the credit: The taxpayer must complete and attach two simple one-page forms to their state tax return: MO-DAT and MO-TC. The link to the MO Department of Revenue webpage on the credit and to the forms can be found at: http://dor.mo.gov/tax/taxcredit/dat.htm
