Subject: [leadership] Responding to Inquiries

Colleagues:

In response to several calls to the ACB Office and one I received personally this morning, let me bring everyone up-to-date regarding possible assistance to blind persons living in Haiti.

I spoke earlier today with Penny Hartin, Executive Director of the World Blind Union. She informed me that the Canadian Council of the Blind has attempted to make contact with a number of Haitians, but unsuccessfully so far. There have also been unsuccessful efforts to contact the School for the Blind in Port O'Prince and a professor at the university with whom Donna and I became acquainted last year. The organization within the World Blind Union comprising French-speaking WBU members has also failed to make contact with anyone in the country.

As such, I cannot provide any information at this time as to where to direct contributions specifically for blind Haitians. I will inform everyone as soon as I receive any news or have information on where to forward such contributions. In the meantime, the usual organizations which assist during such disasters are certainly worth helping if you wish to do something immediately.

Keep Haiti and especially those who are blind or otherwise disabled in your thoughts and prayers.

Mitch Pomerantz
