Subject: [leadership] Get Ready for 2010 ACB Legislative Seminar
Come one come all to the 2010 ACB Legislative Seminar!
We continue to work on a wide array of advocacy and legislative issues as we
enter a new decade.
Below is a sample of some of the topics that will be discussed during the
Seminar. A more formal agenda will be disseminated in the coming weeks but I
wanted to send this note in the hope that it will assist you in arranging
for Hill meetings on February 23.
LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES
H.R. 3101, Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act
Comprehensive telecommunications legislation that would update the
communications Act to provide grater access for people who are blind or
visually impaired to wireless devices such as PDA's accessible user
interfaces like menus on DVR's and TV menus, along with accessible emergency
alerts on TV and requirements for video description on primetime
programming.
H.R.734 and S.841, Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act
Legislation that would provide a minimum sound emission standard for hybrid
or electric vehicles when traveling at low speeds. This would reduce the
increasing danger that these vehicles currently pose to the blind community
due to the lack of sound emitted.
OTHER ISSUES FOR DISCUSSION
Update on legal developments relating to litigation and structured
negotiations.
Access to books treaty proposal at the United Nations
The federal government's lack of compliance with parts of the Rehabilitation
Act and ACB's advocacy efforts in this area.
As you can see from the items listed above, this Legislative Seminar should
be packed with interesting subjects so please attend!
