[Missouri-l] White Cane Proclamation

Below you will find the proclamation concerning the white cane safety day
issued by the Governor. MCB was invited to participate in a photo shoot
with Governor Jay Nixon along with RSB and NFB. I sent our First Vice,
James Hollins for this event and he assured me he gave a big smile for the
camera.
Here is the Governor's proclamation.

Proclamation
WHEREAS, the white cane, which every blind citizen of our state has the
right to carry, demonstrates and symbolizes his or her ability to achieve a
full and independent life and his or her capacity to work productively in
competitive employment; and
WHEREAS, the white cane, by allowing every visually impaired person to move
freely and safely from place to place, makes it possible for these citizens
to fully participate in and contribute to our society; and
WHEREAS, every citizen should be aware that the law requires that motorists
exercise appropriate caution when approaching a person who is visually
impaired and carrying a white cane; and
WHEREAS, Missouri employers, both public and private, should be aware of and
utilize the employment skills of our citizens with visual impairments and
recognize their worth as individuals and their productive capacities .
NOW THEREFORE, I, Jeremiah W. (Jay) Nixon, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF
MISSOURI, do hereby proclaim October 15, 2009, to be WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY
IN MISSOURI
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed
the Great Seal of the State of Missouri, in the City of Jefferson, this
24th day of September, 2009.

MCB - A GREAT PLACE TO BE!
The purpose of Missouri Council of the Blind shall be to promote the general
well-being of our members and legally blind people in Missouri, and to
support or participate in other programs promoting the best interests of
legally blind people everywhere.
