Anthony M. Logan Lifetime Achievement winner Chip Hailey

Chip Hailey epitomizes everything that The Independent Living Center stands
for. In his own life, he has overcome obstacles to independence and learned
to adapt to his own circumstances. He has thought outside the box and has
worked to achieve a great deal in his life, a life that has a lot of service
still ahead.

At the Independent Living Center, Chip works hard to ensure that each
individual seeking service has the opportunity to live their life as
independently as possible. Chip is often the first person that potential
consumers and their family members talk to. He listens to their stories and
helps them figure out what will best suit their needs. He is compassionate
and encouraging. He works as an advocate for people who are blind or
visually impaired. He is a community educator, raising awareness about his
disability. Chip serves on several boards, reaching beyond southwest
Missouri to impact services and legislation nationwide. He is the current
Education and Welfare Chairperson for the Missouri Council of the Blind, a
member of the Wolfner Library Advisory Council, and a member of the Missouri
Assistive Technology Advisory Council, among others. He is considered a
technology guru on all the councils and committees that he participates in.
Whenever someone needs assistance, Chip is one of the first people that they
call on asking for advice. Chip has worked at The Independent Living Center
for 13 years. He always has a smile on his face and is always ready with a
story to make us laugh. While his title is Intake Specialist, Chip prefers
to be called the “Mighty King of Cool”.

Who we are and what we do

The Independent Living Center in Joplin MO is made up of a group of
dedicated individuals working to increase the independence of people with
disabilities.

We are committed to providing the highest quality of services to our
consumers and strive to meet their needs based on their desires.

We advocate in the community for better access and work to educate the
public that good access is good business.

We assist individuals who have been inappropriately placed in institutional
settings to regain their independence in the community.

We help youth with disabilities plan for their future based on their hopes
and dreams.

We work with legislators to help shape the future of services for people
with disabilities.

We provide support groups and social opportunities for people who have often
become isolated due to their disability.

We advocate for equal access to education for people with disabilities at
all educational levels.

Individually, members of TILC’s staff participate on city and state boards,
community organizations and church councils to give back to their
communities beyond the work they do on a daily basis.

We moved in to our new building at 2639 E. 34th Street this past June.

Our mission is simple: To increase the independence of people with
disabilities.
