Six role models of extraordinary leadership, scholarship and service to others have been selected as 2009 National Achievement Awards winners.

Three RFB&D members who are college seniors and blind or visually impaired received Mary P. Oenslager Scholastic Achievement Awards and three RFB&D members who are high school seniors with learning disabilities received Marion Huber Learning Through Listening Awards.

Each winner is scheduled to receive $6,000 at a February 2010 awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

                        These are their stories ...

22-year-old Kurt Herzer, who is legally blind, just received his B.A. in Public Health from highly regarded Johns Hopkins University - with a 3.87 GPA. Kurt feels passionately about his chosen educational path, and has always maintained a can-do attitude toward life.

Eighteen-year-old Ashley Reese graduated with a 3.5 GPA from Lake Ridge Academy, without the benefit of a special program or accommodation for individuals with learning disabilities. At the beginning of her schooling, Ashley hated to read, but loved hearing others read. It all made sense when she was diagnosed with dyslexia in the fourth grade.

Lucky for RFB&D, Pat Bennett has been volunteering at the Austin, Texas studio since 1995. She originally learned about RFB&D while raising her family in the Boston area, but never got a chance to stop in. When Pat moved to Austin, she saw the huge RFB&D sign across from Trudy's (at the old studio location) and was hooked!

Some of you might remember his face from Saved by the Bell: The New Class (he played "Weasel"). But since then, Isaac Lidsky made history by working as the first blind law clerk for the Supreme Court. Isaac was 13 when he was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa.
