Subject: What to look for in questionable email...
Dear KTIS Subscriber,
I emailed you about a month ago giving you some tips on what to look for in any suspicious email you receive. Due to the questions I've received in the past week or so, I am resending the following information.
KTIS filters out tens of thousands of unwanted emails each day that never reach our subscribers inboxes. Unfortunately, due to the constantly changing tactics of those who send unwanted email, some of it gets through. Due to the high volume of email scams on the Internet, we cannot notify you every time a new scam appears. However, when trying to decide if an important sounding email is the real thing or a hoax, I strongly suggest you adhere to the following simple rule.
Look for a "signature" similar to the one I use when sending out email. (see my "signature" below) It lists my name, my position, AND TELEPHONE NUMBERS. If an email you receive states that it is from KTIS, a bank, the government, FedEx, or anyone else and DOES NOT include a contact name AND A CONTACT PHONE NUMBER, just delete it. Do not respond and do not open ANY ATTACHMENT.
If the "signature" does include a phone number, I strongly suggest you contact the sender via that phone number to verify that they did in fact email you and that the email is legitimate.
Many times you will receive email that appears to be addressed to someone else. This is a spammers trick. Your email address, along with hundreds of others, are hidden from view and not visible in the "To" line.
Best,
