How does a blind person work in television news? Are there any special
difficulties with this?
Tonight our guest is our very own John Weidlich, former program director of
Mind's Eye and former news reporter for KPLR channel 11 here in St. Louis.
What is happening with radio reading services these days? With the
availability of more modern technology, do such services even have a place
in our world today?
We'll answer these questions and many more. To ask your own questions, call
218-844-3388 and enter the access code 26657 pound. We begin recording
tonight at 7pm local time, and the show lasts for an hour.
Now see below for a little more biographical information about John.
I have been totally blind since birth. i graduated from the Missouri School
for the Blind and I attended St Louis University for graduate and
undergraduate work with a major in English. I did some practice teaching but
i never thought teaching was what I wanted. I worked in the news department
of KPLR, TV Channel 11 for a couple of years in various capacities,
including news reporting and reading the news on air. I went to work for
Radio Information Service, Now Minds Eye Information Service in March 1976
and stayed there until I retired last month. I handled programming, ran the
equipment, supervised the volunteer readers and hosted the call-in show. i
could talk a lot about how the radio reading field has changed over the
years. I love to read and I love music. I played piano in a trio during
college and now play with our worship ensemble at our Church. I have also
been involved with UWB and MCB and edited the Missouri Chronicle for several
years, which I really enjoyed doing. If Bonnie needs any more information,
let me know.
