Subject: [leadership] ACB of MD Passes Resolution Concerning Demise of
The Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind

Dear All,

At our recent convention, the American Council of the Blind of
Maryland adopted the resolution which I have pasted below. We
encourage individuals who care about this issue to write to the
Matilda Ziegler Magazine editor and board to make your feelings
known, and ACB affiliates to take up this matter for discussion and
to consider adopting your own similar resolutions.

Thank you.

Penny Reeder, Secretary
American Council of the Blind of Maryland

Whereas, the Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind was established by
Mrs.
William Ziegler in 1907 so blind people all over the world would have
access
to an information-filled publication free of charge;

And whereas, the Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind has assisted in
cultivating literacy among blind people all over the world;

And whereas, because of the advancement of technology, the Matilda
Ziegler
Magazine for the Blind is available not only in Braille, but also in
formats
that include four-track, half-speed cassette, email, diskette, podcast,
and
web Braille;

And whereas, in spite of so many choices of formats, Braille is the only
way
in which a significant number of readers of the Matilda Ziegler Magazine
for the Blind have access to its pages;

And whereas, the Board of Directors of the Matilda Ziegler Magazine for
the
Blind have made a decision to stop all formats of the composition of the
publication and intend to turn it into an online blog which will only
carry
news items related to blindness issues and will no longer feature other
articles of general interest;

And whereas, the current reading formats and content of the Matilda
Ziegler
Magazine for the Blind, including both disability-related and
general-interest articles have informed and entertained blind readers of
the
publication all over the world;

And whereas, the loss of the Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind as
it
has been published since 1907 would be profound throughout the
world-wide
blindness community;

And whereas, the loss of the Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind
would be
felt most particularly and significantly in those parts of the world
where
blind individuals have limited access to Braille and even less or no
access
to the other offered formats;

Now, therefore, be it resolved by the American Council of the Blind
of Maryland
that we call on the Board of Directors of the Matilda Ziegler Magazine
for
the Blind to reverse its recent decision regarding changes in the
production
of the publication. Further, we call on the Board of Directors of the
Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind to continue producing the
publication
in various formats, including Braille, and to produce a publication
containing a variety of articles.
