It takes more than passion; it takes a commitment and action to see the
change that you desire. Every one of you has a story to tell, every one of
you has talents, skills, and abilities that you can utilize. It is my hope
as the Advocacy Trainer that I can help you apply your passion for change
into actions of change. When many of you place phone calls, send e-mails,
attend meetings, visit the capital, you change the perspective of the
legislators. They are now held accountable to you!!
"Dog Day Afternoon"
There is a lot of discussion and heated debate going on about health care
reform in this country. If you have a moment, I encourage you to watch this
video about a gentleman in Florida. I think you will discover that we have
much work to do to change the perspective of our "able-bodied" health care
insurers about the critical and necessary contributions of individuals with
disabilities to our families, our friends, our communities and society!

"Baby, You Can Drive My Car"
While Delta Center along with other social service agencies are able to
provide some transportation for individuals with disabilities, through a
multi-faceted, coordinated effort of a number of programs, starting on
November 2nd, Delta Center will present a new program for persons who work,
called "Workforce Transit" (WFT). While this is a step in the right
direction, we will need to continue to pursue how we can meet everyone's
need for a ride whether it is to a doctor, shopping for the holidays, going
to a movie or friend's house, and to be completely free to live our lives
with quality and dignity. WFT is launching first in the St. Charles area so
if you would like to find information or details about the program please
call the Delta Center at 636-926-8761 for additional information.
"Doctor, Doctor, Give Me the News."
Recently, the health department set up a toll-free number to provide
around-the-clock H1N1 flu and vaccine information to Missouri residents. The
number, 1-877-FLU-4141 (1-877-358-4141) will be answered 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. Specialists with the H1N1 InfoLine will answer questions
about flu symptoms, when to seek medical care and ways to limit the spread
of the flu, including questions about the new vaccine. Health care
professionals can also call the toll-free number for more information about
the H1N1 flu and vaccine.
H1N1 flu symptoms include fever, cough, body aches and sore throat. Most
cases are relatively mild to moderate and do not require treatment. Most
people with H1N1 flu can recover at home. They should get plenty of liquids,
take over-the-counter medication to reduce their fever and stay home and
rest.
"The Heat Is On!"
Missouri's Cold Weather Rule goes into effect Sunday, November 1st,
prohibiting the disconnection of service when the temperature is forecasted
to drop below 32 degrees for the following 24 hour period.
Among other provisions, the Cold Weather Rule also requires utilities to
notify customers, by mail, at least ten days prior to a date of proposed
disconnection of services. Additionally, the utility companies must notify
delinquent customers about possible financial help in paying their bills.
The Cold Weather Rule is not intended to allow delinquent customers to have
their homes heated at no cost.

"Dear Jurisprudence"
Just to dispel all of the myths about lawyers, there are some truly good
ones that are providing pro bono services for individuals and families. The
Crisis Nursery is holding a Dinner and Discussion next Tuesday. Please have
individuals and/or families RSVP to Haley by Monday Nov 2nd @ 636.940.0742.
Here are a few topics she will be talking about on a basic level to the
group:
1. Traffic law (suspensions, no insurance, fines, etc.)
2. Probate law (deceased relative with a few assets . . . how to get the
process completed)
3. Basic estate planning documents (power of attorney for health care,
power of attorney for finance, simple will)
4. Landlord/tenant eviction process
5. Defending debt collection actions
