When you listen to Books And Beyond, I promise it will be unlike any we
have done before.
Our guest will be Tom Stiles, internal coordinator of the former West
Virginia State Penitentiary in Moundsville.
Built immediately at the end of the civil War, this prison, whose inmates
were often convicted of murder, remained open until a new one was built in
1995.
What happened to older prisoners as they aged? How were they protected from
other inmates? What was daily life like? What is the tie between Charles
Manson, his mother, and this prison? Why was the warden required to live on
the prison grounds while working there? How have prisons changed? When was
capital punishment abolished in West Virginia? Should it be brought back?
Fortunately, most of us never have the experience of seeing a prison or of
visiting a friend or relative there. This Books And Beyond will give us
insight in to life we hear about only on the news or in movies.
