Newswire
Few novels explore life of a man after the death of his wife. In our next
Romance discussion group, we will discuss After, writtten by Phyllis
Reynolds Naylor.
How does a man come to terms with the loss of his wife? When and how should
he begin another relationship? In what ways should his adult children be
considered? In a life often filled with household chores and job
responsibilities, the care and communication with children has often been
left to wives which leaves a father with little knowledge of how to
communicate with them. How should he help with the ongoing dilemmas
and serious problems his children face?As he completes his first year of
life without the woman he loved, how will his view of her and their marriage
change? In the silence, as he sifts through memories of their life together,
his mind is filled with questions she can never answer. Do any of us really
understand those closest to us?Are there parts of a person that will
always remain inviolate and known only to them? With Death as a dividing
line, how does anyone go on after such a loss.
Join me on Friday, June 19, for discussion of a book that will inspire and
stimulate a thoughtful conversation. A short review of After appears
below. It is available from the Nls download site or can be obtained by
request through the following book number

There aren't that many domestic dramas told from the older middle-aged male
viewpoint, and Naylor's story of Harry Gill, who has lost his wife of 34
years
to ovarian cancer, will appeal to readers of both sexes with its warm,
candid depiction of love, grief, and community. Harry's goal is simple--"to
survive
the first year and show his grown children how it's done." He does that,
even as he never denies his sadness. He returns to work in his Maryland
neighborhood
outside D.C., deals with his kids, hangs out at the local barbershop, fights
off matchmakers, discovers secrets about his wife (or does he?), and begins
to fall in love again. The appeal here is in the daily detail, as Harry
mourns what he's lost, haunted by the intimate memories he can't relive with
anyone
else. This is, above all, a celebration of a happy marriage, and as such it
represents quite a change of pace for celebrated children's author Naylor,
whose Shiloh (1991) was a Newbery Medal winner. Hazel Rochman
