Missouri's, indeed, St. Joe's, favorite son Walter Cronkite died today.
With all the excessive hoopla surrounding Michael Jackson's death, I hope
the media will devote its attention to a true American hero who did not have
any skeletons in his closet. He reported the news fairly and honestly.
Who could not forget seeing him wiping his tearstained face and removing his
horn-rimmed glasses, announcing President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot
or rubbing his hands together with glee when Neil Armstrong first set foot
in the moon? He showed courage, too, telling his television audience we
ought to get out of Vietnam. He was voted The Most-Trusted Person in America
several times, even above Reverend Billy Graham. But he was modest and
humbled by all these accolades. I just finished reading his autobiography, A
Reporter's Life, and he was as real as real can be. Rest in Peace, Uncle
Walter. And that's the way it is.....
