As the weekend approaches, Senators are still waiting for the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to provide a budget estimate for a Senate healthcare reform compromise reached Tuesday among several Democratic Senators.  The estimate should be ready within the next few days.  If the CBO says that the proposal is at least deficit-neutral, a Senate vote on the healthcare reform bill could be quick to follow, where many observers think it has the votes to pass.

 

Last Friday, the bill withstood an attempt to eliminate the CLASS Act from the bill.  Under the CLASS Act, workers would pay a premium into a voluntary insurance program through payroll deductions. After contributing for five years, they would become eligible for a cash benefit of about $50 to $75 a day for long-term care services if needed due to a disability.  The benefit could pay for measures to retain a job or independence such as having a ramp installed for a home, or for other assistive technology such as environmental controls, computer adaptations, a wheelchair lift for a vehicle, etc.  It could also pay for assistance such as a caregiver to come to a home to help with daily living activities--bathing, dressing, cooking meals, etc.
