PENNSYLVANIA SOCIETY FOR THE
ADVANCEMENT OF THE DEAF
Founded 1881 * Incorporated 1891
August
23, 2009
Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr.
393 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Honorable Senator Casey:
Please support HR 3101 as a sponsor and vote to pass it.
This bill updates the Telecommunications Act to
make all telecommunications and video media
accessible to people with disabilities. You
should be familiar with Telecommunications Act
and your support as a sponsor will be much valued
by the membership of the Pennsylvania Society for
the Advancement of the Deaf (PSAD). This bill is
a much needed update of the earlier
Telecommunications Act which requires that the
rapid expansion of technology, communications,
and media be accessible to all people with
disabilities. HR 3101 goes a long way to
leveling the playing field for people with disabilities.
PSAD is the states premier civil rights
organization of, by and for Deaf and Hard of
Hearing voters of the Commonwealth of
PA. Established in 1881, the PSAD was shaped by
deaf leaders who believed in the right of the
American deaf community to use sign language, to
congregate on issues important to them, and to
have its interests represented at the state and
national level. These beliefs remain true to this
day, with American Sign Language as a core value.
The advocacy scope of the PSAD is broad, covering
a lifetime and impacting future generations in
the areas of early intervention, education,
employment, health care, technology, youth
leadership, telecommunications, and more
improving the lives of thousands of deaf and hard
of hearing citizens of the Commonwealth.
The mission of PSAD is to maximize the
participation and productivity of its Deaf and
Hard of Hearing citizens within the larger
society of Pennsylvania through education, advocacy and service.
The PSAD is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization
supported by the generosity of individual and
organizational donors, including corporations and foundations.
Sincerely yours with deep appreciation,
Gary M. Bootay
