News Wire,
How does the marriage of parents affect our own view of romance and love?
What happens to you when the parents you love don't seem to love each other
any more? What happened to all their dreams and how does that impact on
yours? When bitter silences and angry words are all you see of the love that
used to be, who can you talk to? What can you do when you find yourself
attracted to the new manyour mother is beginning to love? Should you
betray her and tell your father? Does he know already? What do you owe to
your mother, your father, yourself?
In The Starlite Drive-in, a debut novel by Marjorie Reynolds, 12 year old
Callie Anne Benton deals with all those questions. She learns about the
tendrness of love, but she learns that love in reality is vastly different
from our dreams. That long ago summer changed her life and gave her a view
of life and love that would change her forever.
Below is a review from the School Library Journal of this lovely novel. It
is available on bookshare.org or in Braille through the National Library
Service. Join me to discuss a family that will touch your heart and bring
tears to your eyes. .
From School Library Journal
During the long, hot summer of 1956 in rural Indiana, Callie Anne Benton,
almost 13, is stuck at home on the grounds of the Starlite Drive-in. Her
agoraphobic mother has not left the house in five years, trapping her
embittered father, who manages the facility, in a job he has grown to hate.
Callie Anne is happiest when she is watching movies with her father in the
projection booth. The arrival of a drifter, Charlie Memphis, hired to work
at the drive-in, promises to make the summer more bearable. Callie Anne, at
first enamored of his charms, grows alarmed as she watches the man's
kindness toward her mother and the growing relationship between the two.
When he coaxes Teal out of the house and perhaps out of her husband's life,
Callie Anne is faced with some difficult choices. A disastrous turn of
events teaches her the complexities of love and loss. Young adults will
enjoy this study of divided loyalties, told in the voice of the grown-up
Callie Anne, as she tries to sort out the secrets of that tumultuous summer.
